Chicago Fire is an American professional sports franchise based in Chicago, IL. The club competes in MLS as a member of the Western Conference, with moved from the Eastern Conference to the West in 2020. The club has won two MLS Cups and one Supporters Shield but have also fallen short in the playoffs.
The Fire was founded by Andrew Hauptman and John Ditchendorf. They started out in the North Division, competing in the North American Soccer League (NASL) before moving up to the MLS in 1996. Chicago has been known to be a difficult place to play because of the high temperatures in the winter. However, with the recent additions of Igor Juliao and Brian McBride, the Fire has improved their home atmosphere for the players and fans. The Fire has also made a few key changes to their roster recently, as well.
Recently, Chicago acquired veteran defender Frank Lampard. He has proven to be a valuable part of their defense, scoring four goals in the Fire's first ten games of the season. He is coming off a down year with Manchester City, missing time due to injury. He is known for his speed and has experience playing in a high-pressure game. In addition to Lampard, other notable additions to the Fire roster include Brazilian goalkeeper Miguel Camargo, Spanish winger Andres Guardado, English forward Brian McBride, and Australian midfielder Jermaine Jones. This will definitely give the team a boost in energy and intensity.
In addition to these new additions, Chicago is also starting to develop new players. Defender Brian Boswell has impressed coaches during training sessions and is expecting to make the Fire roster this year. He is considered one of the best young defenders in the MLS. Also, fellow centerback Matt Polster should be able to earn a spot on the team as well.
Other additions have been made to the Fire roster this year, including former USMNT international defender and current coach Bob Bradley. Former coach Frank Klopas was replaced by Curt Onalfo in November, and Bradley was brought on. He is the assistant coach. He brings a wealth of knowledge to the team, as well as previous coaching experience, having coached the Fire from 1997 to 1998.
Overall, the Fire roster looks strong, but they still have work to do. In order to get back into the playoffs and challenge the Chicago Bulls, they will have to win the Central division. Although the Fire does not seem to have much talent down on their defense, they are still expected to compete for the Supporter's Shield. With the additions made recently, the Fire looks like they can make a strong push at the top.
