The San Francisco 49ers have been a popular American football team for most of their history. They are currently a member of the NFC (National Football Conference) West division as part of the NFL's National Football Conference. This article will take a look at the recent history of the Niners and how they became a top NFL football team.
In the early 1900s, the San Francisco team played in the Pacific Coast Football Conference. Their home stadium was located in Candlestick Park, which was then referred to as Candlestick Park. The team's primary goal was to beat the Chicago Bears. This would lead to them being in the second round of the NFL playoffs, but they were eliminated by the Green Bay Packers in the second round.
In the next few years, the San Francisco team changed its name to the San Jose Earthquakes. The team was also known as the Earthquakes at this time. The team won two more straight Western Division titles, but they fell short in the first round of the playoffs. The team lost in four games to the rival Los Angeles Rams.
A few months after the Rams were defeated, Jerry Gaudelli joined the team. He went on to become one of the best running backs ever in the NFL, scoring over 5000 yards on the ground.
Following the conclusion of the 1950 season, the team entered into a new era of football. The Niners became the Chicago Bears. This change was made due to the fact that the team was moving from the old Polo Grounds stadium to a brand new stadium. The new stadium was named Wrigley Field and it was designed by renowned architect Cass Gilbert.
It wasn't long before the team's name was changed again to the Niners during the famous “Chicago Bears vs. San Francisco 49ers” game which took place in the famous Wrigley Field on October 31st, 1951. During this game the two teams met in a classic game which included many exciting moments. Unfortunately for the Bears, they were unable to come out with a victory. This result left the team without a win in its last five games of the season.
After the season was complete, the team was forced to move from their old home in San Francisco. They had to relocate to Oakland until the team was able to secure a new home in Santa Clara.
This was the year that the San Francisco team finally started winning. It was also the year that legendary quarterback Joe Montana finally earned his first Super Bowl championship.
Since the relocation of the San Francisco team in 1960, the team has continued to have success. With several notable players who had their share of success, the team continues to compete in the National Football League.
