Gregg Berhalter has been an American soccer coach since 1995. He has coached the U.S. Men's National Soccer Team and is now the head coach of the U.S. Men's National Team.
Before he became a coach, Berhalter was an MLS soccer player-coach at the University of Maryland. During his years as a player, Berhalter earned two MLS Cup titles and one Supporters Shield. Before he played in the MLS, he played three seasons in the North American Soccer League, where he also earned one MLS Cup title. As a player-coach, Berhalter managed the first team at Maryland before he became the head coach.
As a player, Berhalter had many standout moments on the field. In addition to winning MLS Cups with the Columbus Crew and then with the Montreal Impact, Berhalter was named the MLS Player of the Year and was selected to the MLS Best XI.
Before he became a coach, Berhalter played on the field for two decades with the San Jose Earthquakes of MLS, where he won a pair of MLS Cups and two consecutive MLS regular season championships. He then went on to manage the San Jose Earthquakes in the MLS All-Star Game, while still coaching the team during the 2020 MLS campaign.
During his coaching career, Berhalter has guided teams to the finals of the Champions League, the quarterfinals of the FIFA Club World Cup, and the final of the CONCACAF Gold Cup tournament. In the recent Gold Cup, the team reached the quarterfinals before they were defeated by eventual champion, Mexico.
A native of Maryland, Gregg Berhalter has led the U.S. Men's National Team to five World Cups, six Gold Cups, five Intercontinental Cups, four Olympic appearances in the FIFA World Cup, two Olympic Games, the 1998 World Cup, the Copa America tournament, the 2020 Copa America, and two World Cup tournaments. He is one of only three American coaches to win four World Cups, but he is one of just a few American coaches to win as many Gold Cups and at the same time.
As a player, Berhalter was a key contributor to the success of the Crew, helping the team reach the MLS Cup final two years running. He played the full 90 minutes in both of those finals and scored two goals, including his first MLS goal, which came against D.C. United in the MLS Cup final. Berhalter helped the team to a win over the Montreal Impact in the 1998 MLS Cup final before falling in extra time to eventual champion, Los Angeles Galaxy.
In his coaching career, Berhalter has managed a number of players at various levels of play. He managed the first team at Maryland, where he managed a record of 65 wins and just nine losses. During his tenure, he was the architect of the expansion of the program into the NCAA Division II ranks.
He served as the coach of the University of Maryland for two years, but left to become the coach of the American Football Conference (ACC) champions for the second year. He also coached the Under Armor High School Football team that made it to the state championship game and won the state championship in his first season.
