Cedric Benson is an American NFL football player who was primarily a running back for the Green Bay Packers in the NFL. He played high school football at the University of Texas and was a consensus All-Star in his career. He played three years in the NFL for the Packers and became one of the best players of his era, but suffered a debilitating neck injury that ended his playing career prematurely.
Born in Dallas, TX, Benson was recruited by numerous colleges before he chose to play football at the University of Texas. He was a starter on the team from 1986-1990. Although he had a great career, he was forced to undergo two major neck injuries before retiring from the NFL. After having surgery, Benson was given limited time to recover and could not be used in full-contact drills until he healed.
While at UT, Benson started out at quarterback and wide receiver and quickly made an impact. He was one of the top quarterbacks at his position at the school. He also became known as a dependable, hard-hitting defensive player. A few years later, he was traded to the Packers for a sixth round draft pick in 1988. He became a popular player at the time because of his outstanding athletic ability and work ethic.
It was at this point that Benson developed what has become known as his “Catch Me If You Can” or “Shot Heard Round the World” technique. This tactic entails a player rushing toward the ball and then making a sudden turn of direction after he has caught it. He is able to make the most of the momentum gained, making a great play that allows him to score a touchdown.
As a football player, Benson made a number of important plays, including a game-winning field goal in overtime against the Chicago Bears in a playoff game. However, one of the most impressive plays he made came when he blocked a kick from Super Bowl XXI champion Jim Kelly. The kick was returned to the Green Bay end zone, where Michael Hurst caught the winning touchdown. The play occurred because of Benson's ability to turn sharply at the last second and make a tremendous block to knock the ball from Kelly's hands.
Before retiring from the NFL, Benson also became a well-known figure in the sport for his role in the Michael Jordan story. In this book, he writes about the famous basketball legend's upbringing and how he met his mentor. Benson learned about Jordan and other stars from his father. With the help of his father, Benson was able to land jobs with the Bulls and other pro teams and eventually become a popular endorser for companies such as Nike, Reebok, and McDonald's.
