The Red Raider football team features some excellent athletes, including two players who have been drafted in the first round of this year's draft. This team is led by quarterback Matt Blanchard, a sophomore from Plano TX who led his team to the championship game against LSU. Blanchard is joined on offense by running back Johnathan Gray, a junior from Dallas, and wide receiver Keenan Reynolds, a sophomore from Cedar Hill TX.
The Red Raider football program is known for its defensive prowess, as well, having been ranked fifth in the nation, according to the USA Today, in yards per play allowed. In fact, the Red Raiders is considered one of the best teams in the country when it comes to stopping the run, with two starting All-American defenders on the defensive line, linebacker Eric Fisher, and defensive end Chris Young. Fisher, a senior from Fort Worth, was named to the second team All-Big XII, while Young, a senior from Dallas, was also a first team selection.
In addition to the defensive prowess of the Texas Tech basketball team, there are some outstanding offensive talents on the roster as well. Among them are forward Devon Johnson, a junior from Dallas who is ranked fourth nationally in scoring; tailback Travis Dickson, a junior from Plano, who is the school's all-time leading passer; wide receiver Marcus Reese, who is ranked fourth in the conference in receiving yards; and guard Travis Jackson, a junior from Houston, who is third in the conference in scoring.
