The football field is the most recognized and well-known playing surface of all of professional sports. The rectangular shape of the field of play of many American football games usually measures 100 yards long, with the field goal line being about one yard from the center of the ends and approximately 160 yards wide. There are end zones extending beyond the center of the ends to the “golden” end lines, for a total width of 160 yards.
The size of the football field is determined by the type of football the team uses. The most common type of football used in football games is the American Football, which is generally played on turf; however, many colleges and high schools have used synthetic grass for their football fields.
The football field is not flat but has a slight inclination to the left or right depending upon the alignment of the team. It is generally divided into two areas – the hash mark, which represent the center of the offensive formation, and the offensive line. Each team starts at the hash mark and begins to line up with their receivers facing them, while their defensive line is aligned around the offensive tackle. The defenders then line up opposite the offensive line to stop any penetration.
The two sides of the football field are referred to as the offense and defense. The offense starts at one side, either the offensive or the defensive side, while the defense begins at the other side, which is known as the defensive side. Most of the time, the offensive team begins to play the ball towards the offensive side of the field. On defense, the opposing team begins to block each other and attempts to prevent the offense from scoring points.
Football games often begin with an extra period of play. This extra period of play is known as overtime. Overtime is played until one team has scored more points than the other, or until one team has had more points than the other with the last play being a field goal. The score determined by overtime is then compared to the margin of each team's lead in points to determine the winner.
Many football games are also officiated by separate officials known as referees. These officials are responsible for calling different types of fouls on the offense or the defense. Most fouls are called with the exception of illegal use of hands, blocking a kicker, unsportsmanlike conduct, unnecessary roughing the kicker, helmet-to-helmet contact, facemasking, helmet-to-head contact, a player throwing a ball toward the field, and a personal foul. These officials are called by name on the scoreboard.
A referee is responsible for determining the score at the end of the football game based on the rules of the sport. If one team wants to play until they win, or until one team has scored more points than the other, the game will be completed if that team has won the game.
Football games are often the largest spectator events in the area surrounding the football field. Due to the large crowd that normally attends these games, the playing surface and the field are often a lot rougher than it would be in a smaller stadium.
Because of the size of a football field, there is usually a large number of spectators that are allowed to sit behind the goal line. In addition to the large crowd, there are usually bleachers or tents surrounding the goal line that will provide an excellent view of the action. This allows the football team to get the most out of their practice and allow them to become more familiar with their opposing players.
Another reason that the football field is so large is because there is no neutral field. All the football games take place on a one sided field and the officials do not know the field markings. so they have to use a chalkboard that they usually mark the proper lines.
Because football games are so large, it is not uncommon for them to be held outdoors. In addition to a large crowd, outdoor games can be very hot and humid.
