The Miami Hurricanes is currently the top intercollegiate athletic teams, which represent the University of Miami, situated in the Coral Gables district of Miami, Florida. Miami has hosted a number of football games including the University of Miami Hurricanes, Southern Florida Gators, University of Alabama, and Florida State University. The Hurricanes have also been called the “Hurricanes” due to their connection with Miami Beach as well as the city of Miami. The club was founded in the early 1990s and is one of the five members of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Miami is the home of the NCAA's Miami Hurricanes, which competes at the school's national level.
The University has a rich tradition of athletics. Many high school programs are also offered here. The University boasts over 300 graduate and professional athletes on its current roster. Many of these athletes went on to play in the professional ranks such as careers with the Miami Heat, Orlando Magic, New York Knicks, and Los Angeles Lakers. Miami has also produced numerous professional football players including Dolphins' defensive tackle Gerald Lewis, running back Craig Downing, and safety Matt Elam.
Another interesting fact about the University of Miami that may not be as obvious is that it actually hurricane preparedness. It seems that they have a hurricane preparedness committee, which meets twice a year. The weather service does require that they post a warning on their website. It should be obvious that such information is highly subjective due to the fact that different areas around the city to experience different hurricane activity. But the mere fact that the city is prepared makes sense for those living or visiting here.
Weather is always an interesting topic when discussing a potential storm such as a hurricane. Miami enjoys some of the best hurricane coverage in the Eastern seaboard. A hurricane warning is usually posted well in advance of any possible outbreaks of the storm. People are warned to take care with all power outages, to stay away from water mains, and to seek shelters. All public schools will close for a period of time as a precautionary measure. The Miami-Dade County Public Library and the Miami-Dade County Government Center will also be closed.
A big thing to note about hurricane season is that the start of the hurricane season is typically known as the “coral season.” This is when the water temperatures are at their warmest. From this standpoint it would appear that Miami would be a prime location for hurricanes, but that is not necessarily the case. In fact, somewhere in the Caribbean Sea, there is a phenomenon known as hurricanes-capable water systems. These are named after the area where they occur.
Although Miami has not seen a major hurricane strike the coastline in over 100 years, the likelihood of a devastating storm hitting the South Florida area anytime in the next 50 years is quite high. Hurricane Andrew destroyed Homestead and Homewood Beach but didn't hit the Southern Florida cities directly. Nor did Rita, another large tropical storm. So Miami has always been in danger, but the actual threat is said to be low. The best advice is to prepare now for the possible hurricane season of tomorrow, and to never get ready too early.
